Sierra Leone must win to be sure of Afcon last 16

Sierra Leone must win to be sure of Afcon last 16

Best case scenario of reaching this year’s African Cup of Nations last sixteen for the first time in their history, the Leone Stars must beat Equatorial Guinea. The kickoff is at 16 hrs at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.

A game that is expected to be a cracker between the West Africans and counterpart Equatorial Guinea, who ended Algeria’s 35-match unbeaten run on Sunday at the Japoma Stadium through Esteban Fernandez only goal and set up a cracker against Sierra Leone.

The twist in this group will be a win for defending champions Algeria over Ivory Coast at the Japoma stadium and a draw between Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone, which means the Leone Stars will end bottom with three points from three draws.

The two nations will face each other for the sixth time in their history with Sierra Leone having a better head to head advantage. However, Nzalang Nacional has shown character just like Thursday’s opponent.

Sierra Leone is still unbeaten after their impressive display against Algeria, and they showed strong character against the Ivory Coast to rally a 2-2 draw.

The team moved to Limbe in the southwest region of Cameroon ahead of their last group match against Equatorial Guinea in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, the players and the technical team departed the Best Western Plus hotel in Douala at around midday on Monday and have arrived safely in Buea, the capital of the southwest region.

The team is lodged at the Parliamentarian flats hotel, about a 25-minute drive from the Omnisport Stadium in Limbe.

Sierra Leone with two points from two games, while the Ivorians top the group with four points to their name.

However, the Elephants must avoid defeat against defending champions Algeria on Thursday (16:00 GMT).

CAF Limbé stadium

About Limbé stadium: Three tournaments in five years

Perched high up some eight kilometres from the city centre, the 20,000-seat stadium built in 2014 offers a breathtaking view of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. It is a pretty and modern enclosure, equipped with an athletics track, a natural grass playing area, access roads adapted for disabled people, state-of-the-art press facilities and two adjoining grounds for training and parking.

Having been the first of the stadiums planned in the Cameroon National Sports Infrastructure Development Program to be built, the Limbé stadium has already hosted several international matches, including official matches of the Indomitable Lions. The stadium hosted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2016, CHAN at the beginning of 2021, and will now host its third major tournament in less than five years.

AFCON: Equatorial Guinea end Algeria’s 35-match unbeaten record

Equatorial Guinea ended Algeria’s 35-match unbeaten run on Sunday at the Japoma Stadium through Esteban Fernandez only goal and set up a cracker against Sierra Leone.

Fernandez guided his effort past Rais Mbolhi to beat the defending champions, and in the process, stop their impressive unbeaten run.

As a result, the holders must win against the Ivory Coast in their final Group E match to progress to the last sixteen of the continental showpiece.

The Nzalang Nacional came into the match following their narrow defeat to Cote d’Ivoire, and they battle with the highly fancied Algerians.

Goalkeeper Owono Ngua had to be at his best to keep out the Desert Foxes who brought in Slimani and Brahimi as they look to rescue their unbeaten run.

The Desert Foxes came into the match on the back of their goalless stalemate against Sierra Leone in the first match.

A positive result for the Nzalang Nacional ahead of their decider against Sierra Leone, who played to a 2-2 draw against the Ivory Coast earlier on Sunday.

Sierra Leone with two points from two games, while the Ivorians top the group with four points to their name.

However, the Elephants must avoid defeat against defending champions Algeria on Thursday (16:00 GMT).

AFCON: Kamara’s rescue Sierra Leone against Ivory Coast

Bo Rangers striker Musa Noah Kamara and Alhaji Kamara scored their first African Cup of Nations goals for Sierra Leone in the 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

Sierra Leone started very slow as their counterpart Ivory Coast took the lead through Ajax striker Sébastien Haller in the 25-minutes before Musa Kamara’s 55th-minute leveller.

The Les Elephant wasted several chances before Nicolas Pépé, who was named Man of the Match, doubled the scoreline.

A last-gasp equaliser from another Kamara, Randers striker Alhaji Kamara collected a pass from former England International Steven Caulker to slot in as Sierra leone draws parity.

Both sides played their part in an enthralling match, which saw Ivory Coast miss an early penalty but then lead twice before Sierra Leone hit back.

Keeper Mohamed Kamara, who won the opener Man of the Match, was at his best today after saving Ivory Coast first penalty. After 10 minutes, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire earned a penalty after Wilfried Zaha was knocked down in the box by defender Osma Konate. But the Sierra Leone goalkeeper was up to the task when he reacted well to stop Franck Yannick Kessie’s spot-kick placed in the bottom right corner.

Experienced Kei Kamara made a vital goal-line clearance which could have changed the storyline for Sierra Leone.

Tention was mounting at the end when Cote d’Ivoire, in added time, brought in their skipper Serge Aurier, who was forced to go in goal after goalkeeper Sangare was carried off injured following his mistake.

Sierra Leone with two points from two games, while the Ivorians top the group with four points to their name.

However, the Elephants have a tough mountain to climb against defending champions Algeria on Thursday (16:00 GMT).

What they said

Nicolas Pépé (Cote d’Ivoire): TotalEnergies Man of the Match

” It’s good to have had this trophy but I would have preferred to have the three points of victory to ensure our qualification in the second round this evening. Now we have to go and keep working to make a big game against a big team from Algeria. We have to put out a big performance because the objective is to finish first in the group.

John Keister, Sierra Leone coach:

“Honestly, I wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told me that we would have two points against these great teams of Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire. Now we have managed to do it, we must continue to work to succeed in our participation in this competition, 25 years later, it is not a question of changing our objective along the way, above all we have a great match to deliver against Equatorial Guinea, after that we will advise, the work must continue especially at the level of the defensive organization, we have conceded far too many chances this evening (Sunday evening) unlike our match against Algeria.

Patrick Beaumelle, Cote d’Ivoire coach:

“Our dressing room remained silent, heads are low, we just gave two points, as a gift. What can be done in terms of organization on this second goal, I still do not understand, what happened, I continue to search, it is also the charm of the Africa Cup of Nations. On the other hand, we must continue to work to improve our efficiency with 18 chances, it was enough to score the 30 per cent to take cover.”

Salah guides Egypt to beat Guinea-Bissau and rekindle hope

Egypt secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau to revive their chances of a last 16 place in TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Talisman and captain Mohamed Salah scored the lone goal to give the Pharos their first points of the tournament following their disappointing defeat to Nigeria.

The Liverpool forward volleyed past Djutus keeper Mendes with his left foot from Amro El Soulia’s clever pass over the top on 69 minutes.

The Pharaohs were forced to work hard for their victory as Guinea-Bissau put up a brave performance against the record AFCON champions in Garoua.

Egypt survived a late scare as Guinea-Bissau had a late goal disallowed following on field video assistant referee review.

Mama Balde fired past the impressive El Shenawy having earlier impeded Omar Abdelwahed in the build-up.

Egypt came into the match on the back of a lacklustre performance against Nigeria and needed a win to rekindle their hopes of progressing. They started brightly with Salah crashing the outside of the Guinea-Bissau post inside two minutes.

Zizo and Omar Marmoush both saw their efforts came of the post as Egypt look for the second goal against the spirited Bissau Guineans.

The Djutus had chances of their own through Moro Cassama, Jorge Fernando and Fali Cande but they failed to beat El Shenawy, who helps Egypt to their first victory of the tournament.

Egypt move to second Group D three behind Nigeria who earlier booked their knockout stage place with a convincing 3-1 over Sudan.

What they said

Mohamed Salah (Man of the Match)

We have a new coach and new generation. After the defeat against Nigeria, we had to rearrange ourselves. We will fight in this tough competition and believe in our chances and where we can go.

Carlos Queiroz (Coach, Egypt)

This win is for Egyptian fans who believed in their team. After four days of pressure the players has shown their strong character and rebounded in a good way. We deserved to win by a bigger margin, but luck was not on our side. We will be better game by game.

Winner of Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast tie set for Afcon knockout

Winner of Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast tie set for Afcon knockout

Ivory Coast top of Group E after their 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday, whilst Sierra Leone impressive goalless draw with holders Algeria has set up a great Japoma showdown between the two West African nations this Sunday.

The match will kick at 4 pm GMT+ 1 on Sunday, January 16, 2022. The Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, will host the contest.

Their last Afcon match was back in 1994 when Joël Tiéhi scored a hattrick, Tchiressoua Guel scored the other as Sierra Leone suffered a 4-0 thrashing.

This time, another Afcon win for the Elephant will see them reach the knockout stages but face a buoyed Sierra Leone side as the Africa Cup of Nations group stage continues this weekend.

A Sierra Leone triumph surely will increase their chances to make the continental round of sixteen for the first time in their history – A draw will still mean a chance as one of the best losers worst-case scenario.

Sierra Leone started their campaign with an impressive goalless draw against holders Algeria and must produce a similar performance against Les Éléphants here.

Over the last three decades, Cote d’Ivoire has never lost against Leone Star, but Sierra Leone is ready to defy all odds on Sunday while the Ivorians expected that their unbeaten run will continue here. The last meeting between the two nations saw them play to a 1-1 scoreline in Ivory Coast.

The Ivorians will not want to drop points in this game as they face reigning champions Algeria in their final group stage fixture on Thursday.

A reminder that the top two teams of each group will qualify, along with the four best third-placed teams. Sierra Leone will have to do two key players. They are Osman Kakay and David Sesay, both being tested positive for covid-19, the SLFA has said.

Osman Kakay was pivotal against Algeria, and it is unclear whether Randers striker Alhaji Kamara, who sustained an injury during the Algeria draw, will be a match fit.

Last-gasp Mane penalty gives Senegal victory over brave Zimbabwe

Last-gasp Mane penalty gives Senegal victory over brave Zimbabwe

Liverpool star Sadio Mane converted a penalty deep in added time to snatch a fortunate 1-0 win for Senegal over Zimbabwe in the Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener on Monday in Bafoussam.

Disaster struck the gallant underdogs when a shot hit the right arm of Kelvin Madzongwe and Mane sent goalkeeper Petros Mhari the wrong way with the resulting penalty on 97 minutes to settle a lacklustre affair.

While Senegal, one of the favourites to win a competition delayed twice by Covid-19, dominated possession, they rarely threatened to break down a well-organised Zimbabwe defence.

Group B continues later on Monday when Guinea will be slight favourites to overcome Malawi and join Senegal at the top of the table.

Senegal lacked Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, who are recovering in Cameroon after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Zimbabwe travelled to central Africa without a couple of their top players, Marvelous Nakamba from Aston Villa and fellow midfielder Marshall Munetsi from French Ligue 1 outfit Reims, due to injuries.

With reigning African Footballer of the Year Mane and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye in the starting line-up, Senegal were expected to secure maximum points without undue difficulty.

The opening 20 minutes were controlled by the Teranga Lions, who camped in the Zimbabwe half and passed the ball casually while their opponents did a lot of chasing at a sparsely populated Stade de Kouekong.

Senegal issued a declaration of their intentions within 45 seconds of the kick-off in 30 degrees celsius (86 fahrenheit) heat when Bouna Sarr fired narrowly wide from just outside the box.

Sarr from German and European giants Bayern Munich went even closer midway through the opening half with a shot across the goal that was just off target.

After a quiet start, Mane burst between two defenders on 24 minutes only to see his low shot, aimed at the far corner of the net, blocked by goalkeeper Petros Mhari.

As the half progressed Zimbabwe began to move into Senegalese territory and should have done better from a free-kick inside the D with 30 minutes gone.

Captain Knowledge Musona took the set-piece and should have at least found the target instead of watching his tame attempt go harmlessly wide.

As half-time approached in the western highlands of Cameroon, Mane turned provider, setting up unmarked Gueye, who was let down by his first touch as he was poised to shoot at goal.

A goalless opening half ended with Senegal back on the attack and Fode Ballo Toure firing into the side netting.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first as Senegal dominated possession without seriously threatening to take the lead.

Mhari rescued Zimbabwe 16 minutes from time when he dived to cut off a cross destined for Mane at the far post.

Senegal survived a scare as full-time loomed with a Zimbabwe free-kick creating a half-chance before the ball was grasped by goalkeeper Seny Dieng.
