Rigobert Song appointed new Cameroon head coach

Rigobert Song appointed new Cameroon head coach

Rigobert Song is now the head coach of the Indomitable Lions, Cameroon’s national football team.

According to the Cameroon state media, this Monday, February 28, the 45-year old record-man for the Lions has been named coach of the side by current Cameroon Football federation boss and former teammate Samuel Eto’o Fils.

The move means the former International replaced Portuguese trainer Antonio Conceicao Da Silva just two weeks after FECAFOOT Executive committee members gave Eto’o a 72 hours ultimatum to decide on the future of the coach of the national team.

Song’s arrival ends Conceiçao’s 29-months stay at the helm of the national side, dating back to September 2019 when the latter replaced Clarence Seedorf.

Two-time winner of the Africa Cup of Nations title in seven appearances at the finals, Song arrives barely weeks before Cameroon’s crucial FIFA World qualifier tie at home and away to the Desert Foxes of Algeria.

Song, who made a record 137 appearances for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, retired from professional football in 2010 after a 22-year career and ventured into management in 2014.

Rigo briefly served as team manager of the Indomitable Lions before landing the Intermediate Lions coaching job in 2016. He was in charge of the team at the 2018 African Nations Championship in Morocco before they crashed out at the group stages of the competition.

He later became coach of Cameroon’s Olympic team in 2018 and occupied the role till his recent appointment.

He will be assisted by Simo Augustine and Frenchman former Uganda coach Sebastien Migne. Raymond Kalla will be the team manager, Souleymanou Hamidou will be the goalkeeper coach, Fever Raphael and Baltaze David joins the team as Video Analysts.

Though Conceicao failed to guide Cameroon to a sixth AFCON success, Antonio leaves with his head high; he guided Cameroon to 14 wins in 23 games, losing just two in a stint whose highlight is a third-place finish at the 2021 AFCON tournament on home soil.

Song’s first litmus test in the Indomitable Lions dugout will be on March 24th at home to Algeria before travelling to Blida for the return game three days later.

FIFA suspends Zimbabwe, Kenya over govt interference

FIFA suspends Zimbabwe, Kenya over govt interference

Zimbabwe was banned after its government-run Sports and Recreation Commission refused to relinquish control of the Zimbabwe Football Association and reinstate the federation’s leadership.

ZIFA officials were removed from office in November on allegations of corruption.

Kenya was banned after its sports ministry also removed the soccer federation’s leaders and accused them of corruption. Kenyan soccer president Nick Mwendwa is facing criminal charges.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced the bans.

It means Zimbabwe and Kenya national teams and clubs can’t play in any international competitions. Funds from FIFA are also cut off.

Kenya’s women’s national team was already thrown out the qualifying competition for the African Cup of Nations because of the crisis at the federation.

The world soccer body ordered Zimbabwe to reinstate its soccer officials by Jan. 3 but delayed any action, allowing Zimbabwe to compete at the men’s African Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January and February.

The bans on the two African nations will be lifted if their governments allow the federations to operate normally again.

FIFA said it will cooperate with investigations into alleged corruption and sexual harassment by Zimbabwe Football officials.

Newcomers Amazulu triumph over Guinean giant Horoya

Newcomers AmaZulu defeated Guinean giant side Horoya 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in their second CAF Champions League Group B match on Friday.

The South African outfit registered their first points in Group after Augustine Mulenga assisted Amigo Memela, who took a deft touch to hand AmaZulu their lead in the 31st-minute.

The West African side started brightly but somehow failed to capitalise on a couple of chances.

The home side could have doubled their lead five minutes to the break when Zambian Mulenga provided a second with another cross from the left, but Abraham Majok’s header was blocked a yard from the line by Khadim Diaw.

In the second half, Horoya was still in it as they came close twice in the 49th minute, but couldn’t punish a mistake from an AmaZulu defender.

In the same group, Raja Club Athletic won 1-0 away to Algeria’s ES Setif to move top of Group B as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group phase rolled into matchday two on Friday.

At the Stade 5 Juillet in Algiers, Mohamed Zrida scored in the 71st minute as visitors Raja picked up a consecutive 1-0 victory to move top of the group with six points.

AmaZulu host Entente Setif on Friday while Horoya must make a long trip to Morocco.
