Dulwich Hamlet Football Club will be holding a Support Sierra Leone fundraiser at Champion Hill on Sunday, September 17 – with money raised going towards aiding the victims of the Freetown mudslides and floods.
Hundreds of people lost their lives in the disaster in August.
A Hamlet XI will play a Sierra Leone XI at 4 pm. But there will also be music and cultural activities – entry is £5 and runs from 1pm-8pm.
A host of Sierra Leone stars present and past legends are expected to turn out for charity on Sunday.
Hamlet have close connections with the country through their management along with former and current players.
Mr Eric Lansana, former team manager of the Sierra Leone (Leone Stars), National football legend Junior Parade Koroma, former Leone Stars captain Ibrahim ‘Obreh’ Kargbo, who is presently playing for Dulwich, Hamlet FC Assistant manager Junior Kadi and coach Tamba Ngongou are all part of the organizing team of this special family fun day charity football match and other activities in aid of the mudslide victims in Sierra Leone.
“We as Concerned Sierra Leoneans in the UK (CSL UK) felt we had a responsibility to do something in aid of the mudslide victims and as a result have chosen football and entertainment to raise funds,” Eric Lansana told footballsierraleone.net
He added, “It’s an all-inclusive event as we encourage Sierra Leoneans from diverse backgrounds be it, individuals, groups or organizations to turn up and be part of it.”
Hamlet and former Sierra Leone skipper Kargbo said: “It’s really sad. People are saying it is 400 people [who died], but it is more than that figure.
“It is also close to the area where I live. It is very difficult for people back home. It has been a very big disaster and this is the only way we can help our people.
“I know a lot of people want to help but it is not easy being in Europe. The only way to do it is to organize a friendly game.”
