CAF boost referees ahead of Inter-club Quarterfinals

CAF boost referees ahead of Inter-club Quarterfinals

With the upcoming knockout phase of CAF Interclub Competitions, the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, CAF has gone the extra mile to equip referees ahead of the crucial weekends.

From Friday, 14 April 2023, until Tuesday, 18 April 2023, CAF will hold an Elite referees’ course in Cairo. During this time, 70 participants comprised 25 referees, 30 assistant referees, five video assistant referees, five instructors and 2 VAR technicians.

The program, which extends over five days, will focus on sharpening the skills of match officials with special emphases on incidents in the penalty area, offside position, game management, tactical fouls, and ball.

This will be coupled with more practical teaching on positioning and reading of the game, VAR sessions and training on the pitch with simulations.

CAF Elite Referees course aims to strengthen the capacity of referees on whom the integrity of the game largely depends.

Head of Refereeing Desire Noumandiez Doue said, “The Quarterfinal phase o the Interclub Competition is key. We have to prepare referees, not just for the matches, but for the season ahead. We have made progress in recent months and minimized mistakes on the field significantly. This is a rebuilding phase for CAF, and we must constantly equip the officials.”

The quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2022-2023 will take place on 21 and 22 April for the first leg matches, with the second leg matches scheduled for 28 and 29 April.

The CAF TotalEnergies Confederation Cup games will take place on 23 and 30 April.

Josh Koroma on target in Town’s triumph over Boro

Sierra Leone native Josh Koroma register his second goal in the English Champions in Huddersfield Town’s 4-2 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Koroma, 24, was making his 12th appearance of the season and scored two goals in the Championship.

Fighting for a place in the second-tier of English football, Huddersfield produced a stunning second-half fightback to beat Middlesbrough and dent their automatic promotion hopes.

In the 43rd-minutes, Marcus Forss had put Boro ahead, but Josh Ruffels lashed a shot into the roof of the net to level just 20 seconds into the second half.

Josh Koroma curled a shot into the corner to put the host ahead before Matty Pearson added a quickfire double as below-par Boro collapsed.

Boro pulled one back through Chuba Akpom’s head to make it 4-2, but that wasn’t enough.

It left Boro six points adrift of second-placed Sheffield United, having played a game more, while the Terriers move level on points with Cardiff City in 21st place.

Francis Uzoho suspended for trip against Sierra Leone

Nigeria first choice keeper Francis Uzoho is to miss the decisive 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying away clash in Sierra Leone in June due to suspension, Football Sierra Leone understands.

Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus keeper picked up his second booking in the qualifying series against Guinea-Bissau on Monday night.

Uzoho was booked for time-wasting late in the game as Super Eagles of Nigeria regained the top spot in Group A after their 1-0 win through Moses Simon’s spot kick in the 30-minute.

The encounter was the matchday four reverse fixture of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers on Monday in Bissau.

A win or draw against Sierra Leone will be enough for the Super Eagles to earn a berth at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire.
