FC Kallon up to third after win over Warriors

Sahr Musa and Julius Goba scored as FC Kallon moved to third in the Premier League table with a clinical win over Bai Bureh Warriors at Angola Field on Sunday.

The Cavaliers on 32 points from 18 matches, two points away from fourth-placed East End Lions in the photo and four points ahead of Diamond Stars in fifth.

The Warriors, who could have gone sixth with a win, stay seventh with twenty-five points (W6, D7, L5).

In Kailahun, Luawa FC beat fellow newcomers Lamboi FC 1-0 courtesy of Nabieu Daffay’s second-half strike.

This is Luawa’s first win since beating Freetonians SLIFA 2-1 on 28th January, taking them up to twelfth with twenty-one points (W5, D6, L7).

In Kono, Diamond Stars drew 2-2 with Freetonians SLIFA as the Easterners failed to leapfrog East End Lions to fourth.

Struggling East End Tigers played to a goalless draw by Freetown City FC, who remain eleventh with twenty-one points.

Attacker Kargbo helps Crotone win in promotion race

Sierra Leone attacker Augustus Kargbo produced a stellar performance, helping his Italian side Crotone defeat Gelbison 2-0 in the promotion race to Serie B on Sunday.

Kargbo, 23, shot was deflected on defender Antonio Granata for the opener in the 16 minutes before Cosimo Chiricò’s doubled their lead after n entertaining opening half hour.

Kargbo has enjoyed a good time trading in Italy since 2018. He made his Serie B debut for Crotone on 19 January 2019 in a game against Cittadella as a 68th-minute substitute for Marco Firenze.

On 2 September 2019, he joined Reggiana on loan. On 22 July, he scored an important goal for the promotion of the club to Serie B in the final against Bari.

He made his Serie A debut for Crotone on 20 September 2020 in a 1–4 away loss against Genoa. On 29 September 2020. He returned to Reggiana on a new loan.

CAF boost referees ahead of Inter-club Quarterfinals

With the upcoming knockout phase of CAF Interclub Competitions, the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, CAF has gone the extra mile to equip referees ahead of the crucial weekends.

From Friday, 14 April 2023, until Tuesday, 18 April 2023, CAF will hold an Elite referees’ course in Cairo. During this time, 70 participants comprised 25 referees, 30 assistant referees, five video assistant referees, five instructors and 2 VAR technicians.

The program, which extends over five days, will focus on sharpening the skills of match officials with special emphases on incidents in the penalty area, offside position, game management, tactical fouls, and ball.

This will be coupled with more practical teaching on positioning and reading of the game, VAR sessions and training on the pitch with simulations.

CAF Elite Referees course aims to strengthen the capacity of referees on whom the integrity of the game largely depends.

Head of Refereeing Desire Noumandiez Doue said, “The Quarterfinal phase o the Interclub Competition is key. We have to prepare referees, not just for the matches, but for the season ahead. We have made progress in recent months and minimized mistakes on the field significantly. This is a rebuilding phase for CAF, and we must constantly equip the officials.”

The quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2022-2023 will take place on 21 and 22 April for the first leg matches, with the second leg matches scheduled for 28 and 29 April. 

The CAF TotalEnergies Confederation Cup games will take place on 23 and 30 April.

Sierra Leone native Mohamed Sankoh was pleased with his winning goal in Vitesse‘s home victory over Go Ahead Eagles on Saturday.

Sanko’s winner helped Vitesse Arnhem move three points clear of the bottom three with a much-needed 2-0 victory against Go Ahead Eagles.

“Massive three points and amazing atmosphere. We keep fighting, ” Sankoh on-loan from VfB Stuttgart posted on Instagram.

Vitesse went into the game with only two home wins all season, but they took the lead in the 21st minute through a Maximilian Wittek free-kick.

In the 63rd minute, Vitesse doubled their lead through a Melle Meulensteen corner converted by Mohamed Sankoh, a tapped-in from close range.

Isac Lidberg hit the crossbar late for the visitors, but they could not prevent Vitesse from claiming the three points that moved them to 13th. 

The Eagles are now three points above them. On Sunday, Vitesse away to NEC Nijmegen as they battle to avoid relegation.

Striker Williams continues fine form with another goal

Sierra Leone striker Augustine Williams has continued with his brilliant start to the season after he recorded his third of the season in Charleston Battery‘s 3-2 victory over Hartford Athletic in the USL championship on Sunday.

Williams, 25, has continued where he left off last season. He led Charleston’s offence with his most prolific scoring mark, bagging a career-high 16 goals across 32 matches. Williams also registered three assists, 21 chances created, and 116 duels won during the campaign.

Nick Markanich and Augi Williams provided earlier goals for the Battery, but Hartford kept pace until the end.

After the visitor’s equaliser through Conor McGlynn in the 60th minute, Battery was dealt a blow when they were reduced to 10 men following Dante Polvara’s sending-off in the 76th minute.

The visitors thought they had the lead a moment later, but Kye Edwards’ goal was chalked off for offside. 

Both teams continued to work hard for the match-winning goal as the game wore on.

10-man Battery defeated Hartford Athletic 3-2 on Saturday at Patriots Point thanks to late-game heroics from Arturo Rodriguez’s stoppage-time goal.

The victory means Charleston Battery’s extended their early unbeaten run to five games in 2023 across all competitions.
