Every player on the Sierra Leone Flying Stars Amputee Football Team has a story to share.
These athletes have lost limbs from land mines that were planted during the country’s violent civil war, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing the game that renews their spirit.
Today, the Flying Stars compete against disabled teams from around the world, and with every kick of the ball, they instil hope in other amputees and help to dispel a lingering social stigma against those with disabilities.

The Covid-19 fight is challenging for many countries, but none is more at risk than developing and low-income countries with abysmal healthcare systems. Among them is Sierra Leone, who continues to see a daily rise in cases.
As a way of complementing government and other donors involved in the fight against the spread of the global pandemic, Kamboi Eagles Ex-Footballers Association, an established non-profit organization led by Lansana Kamara including a bulk of heavyweights residing in the diaspora, on the 2nd May 2020 embarked on several humanitarian gestures to support victims, suspected victims and vulnerable members within and outside the Kenema community.
It was carried out in two different phases, the Freetown delegation led by the Chairman, Lansana Kamara, Mohamed Mansaray and the association’s Secretary-General, Junior Sankoh and other members residing in Freetown. The Kenema delegation led by Alhaji Abdul Kamara, Alie El-Alie, and Mohamed Kpaka alongside other members residing in Kenema.
Among the beneficiaries were a handful of quarantined homes, vulnerable residents, less privileged former players and a few others. The items distributed were gallons of oil, a few bags of rice and some buckets for preventive use.
One of the affected longest-serving secretary-general in the history of the club, Mr Abu Fofanah, whose condition is challenging, were amongst the beneficiaries.
A total of eleven (11) former players residing in and around Kenema received cash donations. Abu Fofanah and other beneficiaries sent in emotional appreciation messages to the members in the diaspora and to all those who contributed in one way or the other in making this move a reality.
He further prayed for more grace upon the lives the association members. The association’s chairman continues to encourage former players in and around the world to join in and make up a solid organization that will help open up bigger opportunities for more community development activities in the country.
He also sent in huge applause to brothers and sisters based in the diaspora for their tireless and unflinching support to the association and further encouraged all citizens to keep to the laid down safety regulations to help wipe out this pandemic in our society.

Sierra Leone and former Inter Milan striker Mohamed Kallon have sent a very classy and passionate message to fellow Sierra Leoneans.
His message comes a few days after recent unrest across the country most recently at Tombo, a fishing village outside Freetown where a gang of youths had gone on the rampage and attempted to torch the police station, according to reports.
The FC Kallon owner, who has been regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s finest footballers, is calling on the Youth to ‘stay away from violence’ after branding them as the future leaders of tomorrow.

Morocco’s football federation (FRMF) says its domestic season will restart when it gets the go-ahead from the country’s government, BBC Sport reports.
The federation said on Thursday that a committee, led by vice president Hamza El Hajoui, has been set up “to study realistic solutions for the resumption of football activity in the kingdom.”
“This commission will start its work and meetings today to develop a global vision in respect of the technical aspects and health measures of football practice,” the federation said in a statement.
“The recovery will depend on the green light from the public authorities,” the statement added.
On 14 March, the federation announced the suspension of all football activity in the country until further notice because of the coronavirus pandemic.
During Thursday’s video conference, the Morocco federation president Fouzi Lekjaa said the FRMF is monitoring the evolution of this pandemic very closely in coordination with the public authorities and its repercussions on the national football fraternity.
“Since the beginning of the pandemic, the FRMF has taken several preventive measures in coordination with the public authorities, through the programming of matches behind closed doors and then the suspension of all matches, in all categories,” said Lekjaa.
Initially, Morocco’s government prolonged the country’s state of emergency until 20 May as Covid-19 cases continued to increase.

English Premier League side Chelsea’s Sierra Leone fan club in collaboration with Popular Sierra Leonean Afro RNB singer Alonzo Abasi has donated assorted food items and toiletries to the medical team of the 34 military hospitals at Wilberforce in Freetown.
The donated goods which comprise of 18 bags of rice, 6 gallons of cooking oil, 3 bags of onions, 5 boxes of Maggie, 20 bundles of water, assorted toiletries and trash bins, will be served as a support in the fight to defeat the unpredicted global pandemic Covid-19.
“As a fan club in Sierra Leone, we want to join the government in the fight to eradicate the virus in our little way. We want to appreciate the relentless effort of our dedicated medical personnel in this fight daily,” Hannah Boima said during the presentation.
“Together we can beat this virus, this is our support to ensure we make the difference and create an impact on the lives of Sierra Leoneans.”
She further admonished that no one should forget the preventive measures in the fight to kick out the deadly virus in Sierra Leone.
Receiving the donations on behalf of the medical team Matron Lieutenant Conel Hannah E.O Pratt said they are overwhelmed with joy to receive such donations from the Chelsea Fan club, Sierra Leone.
“This is the first and only fan club that have made such donations to the 34 medical teams during this difficult time.” E.O Pratt noted.
Pratt added, “This is to show how much the Chelsea Fan Club is grounded with the challenges the medical team is facing during this time and also to appreciate our work that why you are here with these donations.”
However, this is the second Chelsea donations in two weeks. Last week defender Antonio Rüdiger’s foundation committed to provides 60,000 face masks for low-income market traders in the country.
