Al Ahly ease past Esperance into Champions League final

Holders Al Ahly thrashed 10-man Esperance 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate as they book a date with South African Kaizer Chiefs for the July 17 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League grand final.

Ali Maaloul opened the scoring from the penalty spot as the Red Devils scored two more second-half goals from Mohamed Sherif and Hussein Elshahat to cement their victory at the AL Salaam Stadium in Cairo.

Esperance, however, created some early chances, but despite their dominating possession, they failed to carve a way through the lines of Al Ahly’s defence.

Meanwhile, South African giants Kaizer Chiefs qualified for their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final with a 1-0 aggregate victory over the Moroccan side Wydad Club Athletic on Saturday

Following a one-goal victory in the first leg in Casablanca last week, Amakhosi just needed a draw in the return fixture at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Chiefs held on at the FNB Stadium to set a record for themselves and setting a date with Egyptian side Al Ahly on July 17.

Amadou Bakayoko pens deal with Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of former Coventry City striker Amadou Bakayoko on a two-year deal.

Bakayoko, 25, departed Coventry City in May 2021 after it was announced that he would leave Coventry at the end of the season, following the expiry of his contract.

The 6ft 2in tall striker had loan spells with Southport, AFC Telford United and Worcester City before joining Coventry City for an undisclosed fee in 2018.

“It’s a good feeling to be at this club. I’m happy to have signed,” he told the club’s website upon his arrival.

Speaking to the gaffer, he told me about the ambition of the club. Where they want to be. ‘This is something that I want to be a part of.’

“I am now looking to push on with this amazing club.”

Born in Sierra Leone, Bakayoko moved to the Netherlands as a youngster, where he began his football career.

He will be the second player with a Sierra Leonean background to play for the club after Mohamed Medo Kamara.

On 31 January 2013, Kamara signed for English Championship club Bolton Wanderers on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He played over fifty games with The Wanderers.

Peterborough United striker Idris Kanu has described his bittersweet moment with Sierra Leone as an experience never to forget.

Maryland Bobcats attacker Mohamed James ‘Pele’ Sesay has admitted enjoying his time with the American soccer team this season.

Given his form has been so impressive since joining the National Independent Soccer Association in January 2021.

Sesay has taken his tally to four goals from their last six games in this campaign. 

He is the second top scorer in the ongoing National Independent Soccer Association season. The NISA is the third tier of American soccer.

“I am delighted with the way the season has gone so far since joining the club in January 2021,” Sesay to FSL News.

“Together as a team, we have been putting tremendous effort into how we approach match by match. Personally, I have scored four goals in our last six games. A stats I am looking to improve in the ongoing season. I am happy to be here at Maryland Bodcast. I played with keeper Christian Caulker, who has helped me with all the tips moving forward.”

Their weekend triumph on the road in Michigan extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games. After a solid performance. They will be hoping to continue the streak heading into our final Spring Season (and home!) game this Saturday against San Diego 1904 FC.

CAF confirms dates for Champions League, Confed Cup new campaign

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed that the 2021/22 club’s competitions will commence 10 September 2021 with the first round of the preliminaries, while the group stages will start on February 2022.

CAF says the 2021/22 season will kick off on 10 September 2021 with the first round of the preliminaries, while the group stages will start on February 2022.

The African football governing body also revealed the system relating to the list of countries, who will be allowed to enter two clubs in the 2021/22 season.

The 12 highest ranked national associations in the CAF’s ranking will be allowed to engage two clubs in the two prestigious competitions.

According to the rankings, the countries are Algeria, Angola, RD Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia.

“The CAF has extended the five substitutions per rule for the 2021/22 Interclubs season. Accordingly, each club will be allowed to register 40 players instead of the regulatory 30. Nine substitutes will be allowed on the bench instead of the regular seven,” the CAF explained in a statement on its official website.

“The registration of players on the CAF CMS has been extended to 15 August 2021,” the statement added.
