Wigan Athletic set sight on skipper Steven Caulker

Wigan Athletic are reportedly trying to lure Sierra Leone skipper defender Steven Caulker back to English football.

The Latics have identified the Ex-Liverpool and Tottenham defender as someone to bolster their defensive department ahead of the second half of the season.

The Daily Mail reported that Latics manager Kolo Toure’s side is in ‘talks’ over a potential deal to bring him to the DW Stadium.

Just over a week ago, Caulker parted ways with Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük four months after signing a two-year deal.

Caulker, 31, joined the Turkish side from Fenerbahce on a two-year deal in August.

He took part in a total of 7 matches, including 6 Super League and 1 Turkish Ziraat Cup, with the Karagümrük jersey this season, and scored 1 goal while staying on the field for 472 minutes.

The 6ft 3 defender, who played an integral part in the Sierra Leone African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, will start a new club search in the coming days.

Last season, the Center-back spent the entire 2021–22 season on loan with fellow Süper Lig side Gaziantep – where he made 29 topflight appearances scoring two goals.

Transfer: Amadou Bakayoko on Salford City’s radar

Transfer: Amadou Bakayoko on Salford City’s radar

Sierra Leone International Amadou Bakayoko is on Salford City Radar and will be allowed to leave with the right offer this January.

Ian Evatt confirmed there had been recent interest in Bakayoko after he had featured as a substitute in Monday’s 3-0 win at Barnsley.

“We have had bids for Baka, but at the moment, they don’t meet our valuation, so that is the way it stays,” he told The Bolton News.

It is understood that Wanderers have made an offer to loan Southampton striker Dan Nlundulu for the rest of the season, which could mean reduced opportunities for Bakayoko.

Several clubs have been sounded out about the Sierra Leone international, with League Two Salford City understood to be at the front of the queue to sign him in the transfer window.

Bakyoko scored 13 times last season after arriving on a free transfer from Coventry City but has started just five games in the league this term, scoring once.

The 27-year-old has four goals in all competitions and is contracted to the end of the season – but Salford believes he could replace some of the strike power they lost in selling Brandon Thomas-Asante to West Brom in the summer.

Background

“In Sierra Leone, I was playing with Linda Football Club before I moved to Uganda for a year, where I was studying and playing for the School team, Vienna college.

In 2017 moved to Spain and started playing in the third division with UD San Pedro for two years. In 2019, I signed for San Roque de Lepe but had a bad season. So, I came back to San Pedro.

I played half a season in San Pedro before I signed for Europa Point in Gibraltar national league the following season, where I played half a season. I was sent on loan to St Joseph in January – I played in the Conference League qualification round, but we got knocked out by Salvia Page.

This season, I signed with Lynx Football club.”
