Caf bans Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium

Caf bans Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium

  • Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium has been banned by CAF from staging foreign matches until it up to International standards.

In a communication to the Sierra Leone Football Association, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, informed the FA that the Capital Stadium in Freetown lacks adequate facilities, Football Sierra Leone understands.

Sierra Leone are due to host Benin in their next home game on 30 March, their final African Cup of Nations Group L qualifier, days after their away tie at the Setsoto Stadium in Lesotho.

However, CAF latest decision will force the SLFA to look on the road for a neutral venue for Leone Stars to play their Group L final match against Benin.

The Leone Stars goalless draw against Nigeria has exposed the reckless and fragile state of the Siaka Steven Stadium, many soccer pundits believe.

After the Nigeria game last year, we understand Caf warned the SLFA to improve facilities at the stadium, but little has been done since.

The Brookfields Stadium was built in 1979 and has been in existence for over 40 years.

FIFA suspended the venue in 1992 for one year due to overcrowding. The Leone Stars had to use the 28th September Stadium in neighbouring Guinea to play host to Senegal and Togo in qualifiers for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.

In March 2008, FIFA banned the said venue due to poor dressing rooms and a sub-standard pitch.

In February 2017, the Presidential Pavilion of the Siaka Stevens Stadium was given a facelift with 950 chairs installed as part of the upgrade to an all-seater international standard.

Sierra Leone top-flight League postponed Indefinitely – confirmed

  • The Sierra Leone Premier League has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic following an emergency meeting between top-flight officials last Monday (February 15, 2020).

The decision to postpone the 2021 season that was expected to kick off on the 19th of February was unanimously taken by the FA, Premier League Board, in consultation with the Premier League clubs.

National coronavirus Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC) are yet to ease restriction on fans.

Without spectators at match venues, it is yet to be seen if clubs will be willing to play without making any revenue.

In March 2020, the last league was halted and later cancelled over fears of the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Big spenders Bo Rangers were top of the league table with 23 points from 13 matches played during the first half of the league.

Parliament intervenes in SLFA election row

Parliament intervenes in SLFA election row

  • Uncertainty looms large ahead of the Sierra Leone Football Association election this month in Makeni, Northern Province of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone superstar, Mohamed Kallon could be offered a lifeline to contest for president of the Sierra Leone Football Association after the country’s parliamentary sports committee offered to mediate in his disputed disqualification from the race.

After a meeting with members of the FA including top government officials in parliament on Friday, the committee issued a four-point statement to quell the controversy following Kallon’s disqualification.

It called in the sports ministry and the National Sports Authority to further engage all “stakeholders” who in turn should send, in writing, to the committee, solutions for a successful resolution of the current “impasse”.

Former Sierra Leone skipper Mohamed Kallon and prominent administrator, Kasho J Holland-Cole’s nomination process was declined despite their appeals.

Parliament oversight committee will meet with members on Wednesday, according to the statement.

Despite not taking any position to influence the FA’s electoral process, there are fears however that the committee’s mediation could be interpreted by Fifa as political interference which could lead to a global ban by the world football body.

Sierra Leone was previously banned by Fifa in 2018 after the anti-corruption agency raided and closed the FA’s offices following allegations of corruption against incumbent Isha and Secretary-general Chris Kamara.

Both were later acquitted and found not guilty.

It is worth mentioning that under Johansen’s leadership, Sierra Leone is renowned for its power struggle.

Mighty Blackpool launches a brand-new website

Mighty Blackpool launches a brand-new website

  • Mighty Blackpool Football Club is proud to launch an all-new website.
  • As part of their rebranding and restructuring, Sierra Leone’s most decorated club, Mighty Blackpool has been able to deliver a website that will provide a consistent and official stream for information to their fans worldwide.

Due to their enormous fan base at home and abroad, the plethora of WhatsApp groups, and social media pages made a lot of information oftentimes unreliable.

The Tis Tas Boys are keen to adopt many fan services on-line as quickly as possible. At the moment, their different membership platforms are available for sale on their website.

They are working to make membership purchase seamlessly available for those based in the diaspora very shortly, where the credit, debit cards and cryptocurrency will be accepted for payment.

The club is also working to have jerseys and other memorabilia available for purchase through the website.

Mighty Blackpool was until late last year, embroiled by infighting which affected the performances on the pitch and even had the team at the bottom of the table midway through the last season.

However, after the previous administration stepped down and dissolved, a good run of games ensured they were able to get into safety.

Sierra Stars eye 2021 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations ticket

Sierra Stars eye 2021 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations ticket

  • Sierra stars will open their qualifying campaign on Friday, February 5, 2021, at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies against Guinea Bissau before taking on Mali two days later.
  • Sierra Leone national U-17 side, Sierra Stars will join five other nations, namely Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, hosts Senegal, and Mauritania in the Senegalese city of Thies from February 5-13 for the West Africa Football Union competition designed for countries in Zone-A.
  • This six-nation will battle for only two spots to represent the region in the 2021 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football, CAF to be hosted in Morocco this year.

It will be the first edition in Africa U-17 Cup of Nations to have expanded to 12 teams instead of eight.

Head coach Raymond Lewis is self-assured to continue his unbeaten run with Sierra Stars since he was appointed last August.

“I’m very familiar with my boys, and I trust them enough to outshine our opponents in the qualifiers, from training they have proven to fit and ready for the task ahead.”

“No disrespect to our opponents in the group; Guinea Bissau and Mali, they are both formidable sides with vast experience but let me assure all that the time is now for our boys to shine. We will make it to the top two teams of the qualifiers and advance to represent our nation well in the Nations Cup,” an excited Lewis remarked.

Across all levels, Sierra Stars remain the only Sierra Leone side to have participated in a FIFA competition after their impressive performance in the 2003 U-17 African qualifiers hosted in Swaziland and qualified for the World cup finals in Finland alongside Nigeria and Cameroon under the guidance of former Sierra Leone International Musa Kallon.
