Bo Rangers, FC Kallon to know Interclub opponents on Tuesday

Sierra Leone Premier League Champions Bo Rangers and fifth-placed side FC Kallon will know their Interclub opponents on Tuesday following CAF confirmation.

The draw for the 2022-2023 TotalEnergies CAF Interclub competitions preliminary rounds will be conducted on Tuesday, 09 August 2022, in Cairo, Egypt, at 16h00 local time.

Southern Province-based outfit Bo Rangers and FC Kallon are the two teams representing Sierra Leone in the 2022/23 CAF continental competitions.

Bo Rangers won the Sierra Leone topflight for the first time in 68 years. The preliminary home and away matches are set to be played between 09 – 11 Sep and 16 – 18 Sep 2022.

The PK Boys are the second team outside the capital Freetown to win the Sierra Leone Premier League after Diamond Stars won it in 2012 and 2013.

It will be the first time teams from Sierra Leone to compete in Africa’s elite and second-tier competition since FC Johansen and RSLAF in 2017.

In 2017, FC Johansen was eliminated by FUS Rabat 4-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League as both sides played to a 1-1 draw in Freetown, but the Moroccan side won 3-0 at their Stade du FUS on 18 February 2017.

The same year in the CAF Confederation Cup, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces FC reached the first round after knocking out Nigerian side Wikki Tourists 2-1 on aggregate in the preliminary, but they suffered a heavy thrashing to Tunisia’s Club Africain 9-0 first leg on 12th March 2017.

Fifteen years ago, FC Kallon eliminated Nigerian side Ocean Boys 1-0 on aggregate in the African Champions League preliminary after both sides played to a goalless draw in Nigeria.

The Cavaliers were eliminated by Ivorian Champions Asec Mimosa 3-1, who won both matches to progress.

In the 2012 CAF Confederation Cup, FC Kallon eliminated Cameroon’s Union Sportive de Douala in the preliminary but faced stiff competition against Nigerian Warri Wolves. They won 2-0 on aggregate in the first round.

Preliminary rounds’ dates:

First Round (Home/Away): 09 – 11 Sep / 16 – 18 Sep 2022

Second Round (Home/Away): 07 – 9 Oct / 14 – 16 Oct 2022

CHAN: Coach Zappa Koroma pleased with training progress

Sierra Leone home-based coach Francis Zappa Koroma has said he is pleased with his preparation ahead of the doubleheader against Cape Verde at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on July 24 and 27, respectively.

The former International, when answering our questions, indicated that his team is ready to compete in month’s 2023 CHAN qualifiers in Morocco.

“During the training camp in Kenema, I am pleased to say it was intense, but the players were focused. They are fully aware of the importance of this competition. It is obvious that we are going to face these matches in Morocco with a positive attitude.”

“We want to qualify, hence why, as a team, we have been working well together. The willingness from the players has been going quite well. We have selected the best player in the country for now.

“The technical team has been working on going beyond the first stage of this competition because Sierra Leone, as we all know, has never qualified for the CHAN Afcon.”

The aggregate winner over two-legged matches will face Mali in the next stage.

Bo Rangers set record straight over talisman Kamara

Bo Rangers set record straight over talisman Kamara

Sierra Leone Premier League champions Bo Rangers say their talisman Musa Noah Kamara’s status at the club has not changed.

“The player is a legally contracted player of our club. Kamara is a player of Bo Rangers, and his status has not changed,” the club said in their statement.

Their statement comes days after speculations that their top scorer is heading for South Africa on assessment with Kaizer Chiefs.

Kamara, who helped Rangers with 19 goals to win their first league title in 68 years, was part of the Sierra Leone side during the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The striker, 21, is a back-to-back golden boot winner – the Rangers striker is the first local star to achieve this milestone. He first won the 2019 Sierra Leone National Premier League with 15 goals with then champions East End Lions.

It was his goal help to revive the Leone Stars to ensure a 2-2 draw against the Ivory Coast in the group stage at the Japoma Stadium.

The South Province outfit became the second team outside the capital, Freetown, to win the Sierra Leone Premier League after Diamond Stars triumphed in 2012 and 2013.
