Idris Kanu features in Peterborough’s win over QPR at home

Idris Kanu made his third appearance as Peterborough United came from behind to defeat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday.

For the first time, this season the Posh have registered back-to-back victories as Siriki Dembele snatched an injury-time winner.

After a goalless first-half, Ilias Chair put QPR ahead in the 50th-minute directly from a corner early in the second half, only for teenager Harrison Burrows to score Posh’s equaliser.

Posh substitute Idris Kanu was impressive after he was introduced in the 54th-minute for his third English Championship appearance.

A last-gasp winner for the home side after five-minute added time as Siriki Dembele hit a stoppage-time winner for Peterborough to complete a comeback 2-1 victory against promotion-chasing QPR.

Both sides squandered several chances to claim victory in a thrilling second half, but it was who took advantage through Dembele’s late winner.

Kanu’s compatriots, Osman Kakay, was an unused substitute in his sides fourth consecutive away defeat and nudged them out of the top six, while Peterborough remain in 20th place.

Striker Buya Turay returns to action after five months out

Striker Mohamed Buya Turay played his first game for Henan Songshan after five months. He featured in their 2-0 Chinese Cup win over Chongqing Liangjiang on Monday.

He was introduced in the 78th minute for his first competitive game since he was injured in May this year.

“What a feeling to be playing on the pitch with an assist! I thank God for the opportunity and for guiding me throughout this period. I am too blessed with great people who have been with me every step to get the way here today for the thing I love. I want to say massive thanks to you,” Turay posted on Twitter.

Turay, 26, suffered a fifth metatarsal fracture on the right foot during the fourth round of the Chinese Super League against Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic Football Club at Guangzhou University City Stadium.

He was forced off in the 16th minute as his side Henan Songshan were defeated 3-2 in that encounter on May 9th.

He joined the club from Hebei China Fortune ahead of the new Chinese Super League campaign in April this year.

Turay returns to playing could also mean a piece of good news for Sierra Leone ahead of next year’s African Cup of Nations.

It’s an honour to represent Sierra Leone – Steven Caulker

It’s an honour to represent Sierra Leone – Steven Caulker

Former England international Steven Caulker says it is an honour to represent Sierra Leone after making his first appearance in Leone Stars colours in Morocco.

The former Liverpool and Tottenham defender, Caulker, 29, played in the Leone Stars final friendly against Morocco home-based side on Tuesday 12 October at the Stade El Bachir, Mohammédia.

Caulker, who is currently playing for Gaziantep BB on loan from their Turkish rivals Fenerbahce, still waiting on Fifa clearance.

Under the new Fifa regulations, he is allowed to swap associations having only one cap for England. He is qualified to represent the Leone Stars through his paternal grandfather, who is from Sierra Leone.

“Playing for Sierra Leone became an obvious choice, an obvious decision. I played for England at the age of 20 when I made my debut playing for the first team, but since then, I have not played for England, I have been a part of some squads but not on the pitch,” Caulker explained while speaking to BBC Fajah Barrie in Freetown.

He added, “The chance to come to Siera Leone to play football and to play football in the African Cup of Nation to come and get behind the nation in this exciting moment, for me, it became an easy decision to make.

“I am just happy to make the decision. I met with such love and warned love from all of the players. I feel at home – I visited Sierra Leone many times, I built a school in Kambia. My plan from the age of 19 was to give back to Africa, in particular Sierra Leone.”

Caulker paid tribute to his grandad before saying he already felt connected with the West African state. He praised his teammates and described them as hungry young lads ready to achieve success in next year’s continental tournament in Cameroon.

He went further to praised coach John Keister and relishing challenges on the pitch.

Soccer fans hailed his matured performance against Morocco despite a controversial late penalty that condemned the Leone Stars to a 2-1 defeat.

Sierra Leone qualified for the African Cup of Nations after 25 years, having defeated Benin 1-0 at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo in June.

Peterborough United striker Idris Kanu ready to take his chance

Peterborough United striker Idris Kanu ready to take his chance

English Championship side Peterborough United striker Idris Kanu is waiting for a regular opportunity under boss Darren Ferguson when called upon for a starting role.

Kanu, 21, who made his English Championship debut in Peterborough 3-2 defeat to Bristol City on October 2, replacing Joseph Henry Ward in the 80th minute, is looking forward to their tie against Middlesbrough this weekend at the River Side.

“I have worked hard and keep working, giving everything while I wait for my chance. In football, at times, a player must be patient and be ready to take every opportunity,” Kanu to FSL News.

“The season has been tough personally and on the team level, but I am looking forward to getting involved in more games in the next couple of weeks.”

Both sides are aiming at returning to winning ways this weekend as Boro host Peterborough United. Posh have won two of their first 11 games, losing seven times and drawing twice, and lost 3-2 at home to Bristol City last time out.

Kanu has been a regular member of the Posh squad before being called up by Sierra Leone in June for his first international call-up.

The striker was unfortunate not to be part of the winning side that defeated Benin 1-0 at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo to qualified for the African Cup of Nations next year.

Due to Covid issues, Kanu was not able to help the team in the game that sent the West African side to the African Cup of Nations after 25 years.

He joined Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee in August 2017, from where he was loaned out to Port Vale for the first half of the 2018–19 season, and then Boreham Wood in the latter half of the season.

He helped Peterborough to promotion out of League One at the end of the 2020–21 season.
