Tyrese Fornah returns to newly-promoted Premier League side Forest

Midfielder Tyrese Fornah has returned to the newly-promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest following the end of his loan spell.

Fornah, 22, is a Sierra Leone native who signed for  Shrewsbury Town on 18 January 2022 on loan until the end of the season.

Manager Steve Cooper will evaluate his side ahead of the 2022/2023 campaign. The central midfielder, who started the season playing in Nottingham Forest’s Under-23s before making three first-team appearances, including a Sky Bet Championship debut against Blackburn back in August, must convince his boss to be part of the Forest Premier League side.

Fornah, who put up a named man-of-the-match in Forest’s 2-1 win over Bradford City in the Carabao Cup, while on loan, featured in nineteen English League one matches for Shrewsbury Town.

His last match was against Wigan Athletic in the English Football League – League One, when the match result was a 0-3 Shrewsbury Town home loss on the 30th of April.

The Reds return to the Premier League after 23 years away thanks to a 1-0 win against Huddersfield at Wembley on Sunday.

Huddersfield’s Levi Colwill’s misfortune of putting the ball through his own in the 43rd minute means Forest will play in the top flight for the first time since 1999.

Fornah posted a picture on Instagram of his locker and Reds training gear with the message “nice to be back”. And he added a heart emoji for a good message.

Defender David Simbo set for AFC Cup debut with Gokulam Kerala

Defender David Simbo set for AFC Cup debut with Gokulam Kerala

Sierra Leone defender David Osman is set to make his AFC Cup debut with India side Gokulam Kerala against ATK Mohun Bagan at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium (Kolkata) on Wednesday.

Simbo, who joined the club in February, has been named on Kerala’s side in this year’s Asian club competition.

Gokulam Kerala FC and ATK Mohun Bagan will both fancy their chances when they square off in Group D of the AFC Cup 2022 on Wednesday.

In a meeting between two Indian sides, Gokulam Kerala will head into the tie basking in glory after becoming the first team to retain the I-League trophy.

ATK Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, have already seen early AFC Cup action – having navigated past Sri Lanka’s Blue Star SC and Abahani Limited Dhaka of Bangladesh to book their group stage slot.

Head coach Juan Ferrando is confident his ATK Mohun Bagan side are ready for the AFC Cup.

“For us, it is important to have qualified, but it is also important to play well tomorrow. My players need to enjoy the game. Gokulam are in high performance, but we’ve had three weeks to put in the work, and I am satisfied with the preparation,” said Ferrando.

“To play at home is amazing. The supporters are a big advantage, but on the pitch, we will be playing a strong team. We are working hard to be ready.”

ATK Mohun Bagan finished third in the 2021-22 Indian Super League and was eliminated by eventual champions Hyderabad FC in the semi-finals of the playoffs.

“It’s not a disadvantage that the other three teams are champions of their respective leagues, we finished third, but we are a big team, with a very good squad. It’s going to be XI against XI, playing in the same weather conditions. We aren’t under any pressure playing against champions,” added Ferrando.

Groug D – Gokulam Kerala FC (IND) v ATK Mohun Bagan (IND)

Venue: Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium (Kolkata)

Kick-off: 16:30 (UTC+5:30)

First leg play-off defeat for Kanu’s Northampton Town

First leg play-off defeat for Kanu’s Northampton Town

Mansfield Town will have to defend their 2-1 first-leg win over Northampton Town when they face off again on Wednesday at the Sixfields Stadium.

Goals from Rhys Oates and Jordan Bowery ensure Mansfield established the lead in the first tie, but after Ali Koiki pulled one back to halve the deficit for the visitors, there is still all to play for in the second leg.

Sierra Leone international Idris Kanu was given the nod to start by manager Jon Brady, who noted that his side is still very much in the race for League One promotion.

Since joining the club on loan in January, Kanu has featured in eight league games for The Cobblers, including yesterday’s play-off first leg tie.

The Town boss Jon Brady believes his side can still turn it around.

“We are very much still in it. We’re looking forward to taking them back to Sixfields, we have been strong at home all season, we were in the ascendancy in the second half and we need to take that into the second leg.

“We acquitted ourselves well in the second half – we were a lot more purposeful in our play and a lot more aggressive in the things we did.

“We had some good entries into the final third and we just spoke at half-time about needing to do the things we have done well all season.”

The winner will play Swindon Town or Port Vale in the other semi-finals on 28 May 2022 at Wembley StadiumLondon, to determine the fourth and final team to gain promotion from EFL League Two, the fourth tier of English football, to EFL League One
